St. Michael finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 0-1 record. Last year St. Michael finished in Class 4A region with a 0-0 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Cardinals suffered through the first losing season in the school's history in 2017. The 27 points scored by the Cardinals last year were a team record in a single season. The defense allowed a team record 41 points last season. The Cardinals have never qualified for a playoff spot and would love to break that streak this season. The Cardinals have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2018. St. Michael struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 41.0 points a game. The Cardinals would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 0-1 record. St. Michael is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only one seasons. They have managed a record of 0-1 over the past one years. The Cardinals are led by head coach Scott Phelps who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 0-1 record in his first season at St. Michael. The Cardinals have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Phelps. Coach Phelps' overall record as a head football coach in nineteen season stands at 116-94 (55.2%). His 116 wins rank 45th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Phelps' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eleven times and won six region championships. Coach Phelps won a state championship at in 2004. The St. Michael Cardinals will play in Class 3A region one during the 2018 season. The Cardinals may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 4A to 3A. They will compete in region one this year. It will be an uphill battle for the Cardinals if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region one this season. The Cardinals open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Florala on Friday, August 24 at Matthews Stadium. Last year the Florala Wildcats finished with an overall record of 3-6 and in seventh place in Class 1A region two. St. Michael and Florala have met a total of 3 times on the football field.
